How to Kill an
Innovation Project

Without Killing Your
Team’s Appetite to Try Again

16 July 2026, 3 PM

About the
SESSION

Every organization running pilots ends up with “zombie projects” — initiatives everyone knows should be killed, but nobody does. Not because the data is unclear. Because killing a project feels like punishing the people who tried, and the biases that make us see what we want to see, and treat past investment as a reason to keep going.

Design Thinking was always built to work both ends — generating ideas and testing them against reality — and the piloting phase exists to surface what isn’t working. This session picks up exactly there: turning “we learned this isn’t working” into an actual decision.

Who It’s For

Innovation leads, portfolio and PMO owners, R&D and product leaders, and anyone who has to decide which pilots live and which ones die.

You’ll Learn

  • Why a pilot is a test of an assumption, not a small launch
  • The cognitive biases working against every kill decision, and how to design around them
  • How to set kill criteria before you’re emotionally attached to the answer
  • How to run the kill conversation without triggering defensiveness or disengagement
